Teacup Myth
There are certain breeds that have been designated by the American Kennel Club (AKC) as the Toy Breeds.  Those breeds are:
·Affenpinscher
·Brussels Griffon
·Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
·Chihuahua - longhaired
·Chihuahua - smooth coated
·Chinese Crested Hairless
·Chinese Crested Powderpuff
·English Toy Spaniel
·Italian Greyhound
·Japanese Chin
·Maltese
·Manchester Terrier
·Miniature Pinscher
·Papillon
·Pomeranian
·Poodle
·Pug
·Shih Tzu
·Silky Terrier
·Toy Fox Terrier
·Yorkshire Terrier

Of the above toy dogs, the most commonly referred to and fraudulently classified as “teacups,” “teensies,” “micro,” “tiny toy,” “x-tiny,” “ultra-tiny,” “pocket,” “purse,” and whatever term a questionable breeder can come up with in order to justify using this “hook” in order to sell their puppies are:
·Chihuahua
·Maltese
·Pekingese
·Pomeranian
·Toy Poodle
·Yorkshire Terrier

The reason I use the word “fraudulently” is because these questionable breeders are very much aware that a Chihuahua is a Chihuahua.  There are top qualities and there are poor qualities.  If they need to use “adjectives” that are not true, then perhaps their dog is of poor quality.  In any case, they prey on the vulnerability of the Consumer (you) to want what the celebrities are buying and the celebrities themselves believe they have purchased a rare and exotic type of dog to go along with their celebrity status.

Some will say this term is used in order to justify the large price tag attached to these puppies.  However, I have seen many a dog sold as a “teacup” that was sold for $200 to $400.  A high price is not the only prize for the questionable breeder, but also a “for sure sale” by those seeking the elusive “teacup” for such a good price!
I laughed when I read a website that says “teacup” is only a term of endearment.  And that breeder never spoke truer words: endearment of the almighty dollar!
But I also cried when that same website boasted:

“We are also willing to guarantee the size of our tiniest ones, the public may wish to call teacups. Many of our puppies are 6 to 7 oz at 6 weeks and these are the ones we are willing to guarantee size on.  We do have the extra tinies, the one you may want to call  teacups. If breeders call the tiniest Chihuahuas Teacups then we get beat up by the breeders who breed larger Chihuahuas. They literally hate those of us who focus on breeding the tiny ones.We have many puppies that will be 2 to 3 lbs grown because that is what we breed. Many of our parents, females and males are 2 lbs and 3 lb range adults. We also try to have the 5 lbs size as well because the 5 lb size is still small ,yet strudy and the best for most families .If you desire the 5 lb Chihuahua I have a few I feel with get to that size so email me and read captions carefully.”

For all of you reputable breeders out there, would you ever consider breeding a
2-3 lb. bitch of any breed?  What’s wrong with this picture?

These same breeders would have you believe there are such colors and markings within the Chihuahua breed that are “rare” and “exotic.” Maybe to them they are rare and exotic because their breeding stocks’ bloodlines do not contain these colors and/or markings.  However, there are well over 100,000 Chihuahua breeders online and countless others who do not sell online, who have these “rare” and “exotic” colors and markings.  I will not list these rare and exotic colors because they, just like the “teacup,” do not exist.  Just know that if the breeder tells you that you will pay the posted price of the dog because of its color or markings, this is a breeder you do not want to do business with on any level.

Prices should be based on quality!  Therefore, how well the dog meets the standards of its breed has a great deal to do with its price.  What is the dog’s pedigree?  This is where the Who’s Who in the dog’s family increases the value of the pup.  Ask the question of the breeder why they charge whatever price is posted on that pup.  If it doesn’t make sense, then it probably is a “hook,” a way of getting you to pay more than the dog is worth.  As Judge Judy always says, “If it doesn’t make sense, it is usually a lie.”

Okay, so now you realize there is no such thing as a “teacup,” “pocket,” or “micro,” etc., puppy, but you still want the smallest of the 2 to 6 lb. standard.  If so, please read the following information so that you will at least have a heads up on what you may expect by owning a 2 – 3 lb Chihuahua or other extra small toy breed.
